Little chicken update for those asking!! So.. we had some issues pop up. Remember when I said we have lots to learn? Well we’ve been learning!!
From all the temperature changes and perhaps us not creating enough airflow in their brood box (where they live as chicks up to 3-4 weeks) we have developed what we think is some respiratory issues. With these breed of birds you have to keep in mind they are man made to grow really fast, and taste really good. So there are bound to be issues along the way. We took one to the Vets to get some medication and now fast forward 6 days later they are as good as new!! We only unfortunately lost 2 in the process. (We couldn’t believe we hadn’t lost more by this point being newbies!!)
I can’t believe how fast these things grow. A lot of people have been asking me on social media why we chose to do meat birds too. And to be honest.. why wouldn’t we? Especially in todays crazy times.. wouldnt it be nice to pull meat out of your freezer that you know you raised and YOU know EXACTLY what went into that bird. I also take into account how they are raised. These chickens have a nicer view then I do out my bedroom window!! They are cared for, clean, fed, watered and loved. So that is why we chose Meat Birds as well as laying hens. In no way is it ‘cheaper’ then heading to the grocery store and picking up 4 chicken breast for $15.. haha no way. But with peace of mind and a sense of pride we know our chickens are raised well.
Other then the little issue we are loving having these guys around!! So is Levy!! They are so fun to just watch and chuckle at as they do so many funny things. I’ll keep you all posted on their growth.. for now head to my Instagram to watch some videos of them moving around. Especially ones when I wake them up in the morning… too funny!!
Talk soon!
