If you’ve been apart of #TheMorganstonHouse journey since day one you know I’ve wanted to get my hands on these Kitchen cupboards. Don’t get me wrong, they aren’t horrible by any means. But, they are OLD. And worn out, and were screaming for a refresh. Now we don’t have the budget to go redo our whole Kitchen quite yet, but I knew some paint would hold us over until then. My dear Brandon gave me a bit of a fight on the cabinets, he is such a lover of the natural wood look, but he eventually came around. I was so excited when Home Hardware announced their paint sale event and I could really take advantage of these sales. Please note this is a sponsored post by Home Hardware, and they helped fund our project! I have been a fan and customer of Home Hardware for years for not only my home projects but my business as well, so I am proud to promote this Canadian Business! Now lets start talking Cabinet Painting!

The before shots…

I knew right away that painting these cupboards would give the space so much light. Our kitchen and living area is at the back of the house, therefore we only get the morning sun, leaving the rest of the day in a shadow. So I knew I wanted light colours. I chose ‘Here Comes The Bride’ for my upper white paint, and ‘My Favourite Sweater’ for my grey lowers. I love the look of this contrast and will definitely be something I bring forward into my Kitchen down the road when we actually renovate it! But for now, I am confident these colours are not only going to brighten the space up, but also make my countertops pop and really be the show stopper!

Here we go! Supplies needed:

MATERIALS

Beauti-Tone by Home Hardware Cabinet & Furniture Paint (gallon of each colour did my cupboards, plus some extra for touch ups down the road if needed!)

-Paint Brush x2

-Small Roller & Microfibre roller inserts

-Paint Trays, Cups

Natura Safe Cleaner & Large Sponge

-Painters Tape if needed

-Screwdriver/drill

-Sanding blocks, 120 grit or so

Now there are two phases to painting your cupboards. You need a prep phase and then a painting phase. Here is a full breakdown of all steps I took for my cupboards using Home Hardwares Painting Guide!

STEPS

  1. Remove all hardware from cupboards and remove cupboards from cabinets. Ensure all hardware is removed, and set aside. TIP: Keep track of what hardware went where, so you don’t lose anything!
  2. TIP: As you remove your cupboards, add a post-it note to each cupboard explains where it came from. I was lucky and could really tell what cupboard went where, but if you have various sizing, this is a good top.
  3. Start sanding your cupboards using your sanding block. Don’t go too crazy, just think of taking the first ‘skin layer’ off of your wood. Usually one or two strokes per area does the trick with a fine sanding grit like we are using here. Ensure any Knicks or scraps are smoothed out. TIP: I kept my Dyson handy and sucked up as much dust from the cupboards as I could while I went!
  4. After sanding is done, lets clean these bad boys up! Using your Natural Safe Cleaner Prep, prepare your solution and start sponging down your cupboards. Set aside to dry for 20 minutes or so.
  5. Prepare your painting space with a old bedsheet or newspaper etc. Shake up your first colour, and get your tools set out.
  6. TIP: Start by painting the front of your cupboards. I do this so any drips along the sides of the cupboards fall to the back, no the front. So no blemishes can be seen down the road.
  7. Using your paint brush, paint the ‘cracks’ of your cupboards designs & the sides of your cupboard. Using a roller, finish painting the surfaces of your cupboards.
  8. Let the first side of your cupboards dry to your touch and look, and then flip over and repeat steps 7 and 8.
  9. Once your first coat of both sides of your first batch of cupboards is done, set aside and begin colour/batch #2. Repeat previous steps of painting!
  10. You will most likely need a second coat of paint – up to your discretion. Now is the time to rotate everything and begin your second coat!
  11. In the mean time while your paint is drying (even after coat #1) – head over to the Cabinets! Start painting the surface of your space and maybe the trim of your uppers like I have here. This will most likely take two coats as well.
  12. TIP: When ‘waiting around’ for paint to dry, give your hardware a good cleaning! Let soak in some hot water and vinegar or your favourite soap to rinse off any grim from previous use. You’d be surprised how they can shine up! I actually updated all my hardware, but simply spray painted my old hinges to match my new hardware. (Because friends, these are not cheap!) You can see my new hardware from Home Hardware here! I am in love with them! I used this spray paint from Home Hardware to transform and match my hinges!
  13. Time to dry! Once you are happy with your paint coverage… allow 24 hours for your paint to set. TIP: Good time to clean/organize your cupboards!!! No annoying doors to fight with!!
  14. Reinstall your hardware the next morning. Your almost at the finish line!!
  15. Reinstall your cupboard doors back onto your cabinets.
  16. Stand back and admire your beautiful hard work!! I am in LOVE with our new kitchen!!
