Good morning friend! Okay so I dont know about you – but the sun is shining, the frost has lifted, and I’m getting the gardening bug. However I think we are still a bit too early to plant or seed.. but I just need a gardening fix! So I decided to take on a new challenge, starting a herb seed garden indoors! I knew it was going to be a inexpensive DIY, and it would give me a gardening fix until I could get my hands dirty in the garden.

First things first, I needed a space to grow the seeds. The first thing that came to mind was an indoor garden house. No no not on a huge scale, on a tiny scale! So hopped on to the World Wide Web and found exactly what I was looking for at IKEA. Doesn’t IKEA always seem to answer all our questions? So this $19.99 indoor greenhouse was going to be the perfect setting for my herb seed garden.  And its white and farmhouse style approved! You can check it out here!

Next my vision was to have the seeds started in masons. I searched high and wide for wide mouth masons, but couldn’t find any. If you have your own collection – I’d suggest wide mouth so they’d be easy to transplant afterwards. Ill take you through a quick step by step on gathering, planting and caring for your seeds!

-Gather masons, all purpose soil, small rocks for drainage, seeds (I purchased mine from Canadian Tire), popsicle sticks, thin tip marker, spray bottle with water, IKEA green house

-Lay rocks in all masons to coat bottom, this encourages drainage from watering

-Fill masons with soil, leaving about an inch at the top of each mason

-Using a ruler, follow the directions on each seed package relating to the depth needed for each seed to be planted, label each mason as you seed so you dont loose track!

-Once seeds are in, soil is packed, water with spray bottle at a medium spray setting so the water does penetrate the soil, but not hard enough to disrupt the freshly planted seeds

-Keep garden house in a south eastern window for maximum sun and water daily

A tip that I received too is to keep your garden house inside until it gets substaintly warm out (18 degrees or so) and then you can keep your garden house outside in the direct sunlight. It is crucial though to keep watering daily!

Keep in mind during the growing process that each seed will sprout differently and at different times! So dont get discouraged. As long as you give proper care and seeded properly – you’ll have your own herbs to use during the later summer months! Now enjoy planting your seeds my friend, let me know how you make out! Ill be keeping you updated on how mine comes along!

Happy gardening!
