To say I’ve been dreaming about this greenhouse is an understatement. Ever since we purchased our first home and I got a little taste of gardening I was hooked. It’s funny how my Mom and Nana were so into gardening and as a kid I couldn’t get far enough from a greenhouse or doing yard work. Now its my favourite pass time… go figure!!
When deciding okay you know what we have this time ‘at home’ so why not make my dream greenhouse… only thing was I had NO idea where to put it. We have dreams of building a garage and shop one day so I wanted to make sure it wasn’t going to be a tear down in a few years time when we decide to finally do that. So I had to be strategic!
I loved where I originally put our veggie beds because they were close to the house and close to the hose haha. So I figured I might as well keep this close to the house too so I can still have Levy out there with me and keep an eye on the chickens too! (Oh ya.. we got Chickens! Read about it here)
So I got to work! Created all the plans, measured and laid out all the old windows I wanted to use for the project and then I was off to Home Hardware! I decided to build the greenhouse 8×12’ to max out what we were allowed by our township without having to get a permit. So it worked out well! All of our lumber, hardware etc we got from Home Hardware (thank gosh for home delivery!) and the roofing I got from Home Depot. Accessories such as hanging baskets hardware, all hardware and decor inside the greenhouse has all be source locally through greenhouses and antique shops!! I can share the Custom Colour we painted the Green potting bench to match our windows is ‘Mississippi Delta’ by Dulux Paints. I was able to bring in a piece of green window into Home Hardware and they were able to colour match it for me!! Woohoo!!
I don’t have a step by step building plan to share with you all because the Greenhouse was very custom to fit all these windows perfectly. I will say we built everything out of pressure treated lumber so it would stand the test of time and weather. I also made the Greenhouse custom to me and decided to have the face of it be the 12’ side vs the 8’, therefore we made it a slant roof vs peak roof. So glad I went this way! It feels like there is so much more room this way! I’d highly recommend! I will share with you my materials list!
MATERIALS
Lumber: Pressure Treated Cedar Lumber in ‘Sienna’ from Home Hardware
Roofing: Corrugated PVC Sheets from Home Depot (they are super easy to use.. can cut down with a pair of scissors! Use Roofing screws to help secure these sheets.
Windows: Old 100 year old windows we replaced on our Farmhouse.. love how they will have a new purpose! Each window went in with the framing for a snug fit. *TIP if you are using old windows you might want to have a planer on hand to do some trimming! Our windows were not square at all.. which makes it very unique!
Flooring: Plywood Sheets framed out on top of corner deck blocks from Home Hardware. TIP* I would have painted & sealed the plywood sheets before laying down. I had hopes to paint them but once everything got moved in I didn’t.
Hardware: All hardware from Home Hardware and antique collectibles over the years!
As far as inside the greenhouse, I kept things pretty simple with a huge 10’ bench to go along the back wall with an extra shelf layer for storage. I added a shelf on top to hold small pots and accessories! I also add an antique chair and old dresser that I have been hoarding for this special project! Honestly all I did was really shop my own home to furnish the space!!
As far as landscaping I decided to do the non decorative pea gravel do keep weeds at bay and decrease maintenance. I added in a little side Peony garden that I just love. I still have lots of Peony’s to plant that I’ve dug up from our property (our property used to be a peony farm!) so stay tuned on where I decide to put that!
I hope this little greenhouse inspires you to get outside and make your own little space. I can’t wait to start seeds in here and watch them grow. I couldn’t help myself and picked up some perennials to start from seed.. oh and some pumpkins!! Just to get me started!! Stay tuned!!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being here and sharing in this sweet new addition with me. I’m so glad you guys love it as much as I do!! Let me know what you think in the comments below, or come say hi over on instagram!! PS I have a whole virtual tour saved in my highlights on Instagram.. so head there to see more up close!!
Happy Gardening!!

Samantha
Do you have any measurements you’d be willing to share? What about the foundation? Did you pour a slab of concrete?
Thank you
Samantha
Hey Samantha! This is approx 11 feet by 8 feet! I had the space so I figured I’d make it as big as my township would let me without having to buy a permit! It is just a floating floor on 4 deck blocks! Easiest and cheapest way to do it! Hope this helps! Thanks for your comment xx
Susan Bass
Absolutely beautiful! This would be my dream greenhouse too! Thank you for sharing!
Samantha
Hey Susan! Thanks so much! I fall in love with it more everyday! Thanks for commenting xx
Colleen
What is the roofing material?
Samantha
Hey Colleen! This is a polycarbonate roofing material that I purchased from Home Depot! Was super easy to cut to fit! I think it is pretty much guaranteed to withstand any weather other then some hail left marks that I read in its reviews! But we don’t get much hail here!
Jodi Billingsley
Beautiful design Samantha! 🧡 I’ll be building one this spring and I love the look of yours!! Where did you find all these windows? I’m having a hard time finding reasonably priced ones, and I like the large multi-paneled ones you have on the front and sides 👍
Samantha
Thank you Jodi! I actually replaced all the windows on my old farmhouse and kept them for this special project! I know its hard to find duplicates out there! Best of luck 🙂
Jennifer Carr
Hi, I am also here admiring the beautiful potting shed. We have a store run by Habitat for Humanity called the Re-Store. They often have Windows. Look on Facebook or craigslist, and read yard sale ads that might mention windows. Good luck!
Terri
What is the orientation of your greenhouse?
Does the sloped roof face south?
What is your latitude?
Any other tips to orient a greenhouse for maximum sunlight?
Do I even want maximum sunlight? Summer? Winter?
Samantha
Hey Terri! The greenhouse faces north, and the slope faces downwards to the south! I went for maximum sunlight with the placement of my windows… so the biggest ones went on the east and western facing walls! Hope this helps 🙂
lori
How will it be ventilated to prevent mold, etc… do you have levers or just open windows? Its super wabisabi!
Samantha
Hey Lori! It’s not sealed super tight, so lots of air flow still happens! I also have two of the windows on the back on a hinge so I can prop them open to air out if need be!
Laurie Sutton
I love this❤️ And I can relate to being a kid and trying to get away from my mom’s garden, from having to weed it! But, I also worked on a farm, as a young teenager and realized that I liked the smell of the fresh vegetables and the feel of the earth between my fingers! So, as an adult, I had my husband build me two raised garden areas on the side of our house, in its own little nook! I love spending time in my garden, even weeding it😂 Enjoy your space! It’s beautiful!
Samantha
I love that Laurie! Safe to say I’m forever a gardening gal now! 🙂
Jamie
It’s wonderful!!! I love the old windows and how you arranged them. Very inspiring!!!
Samantha
Thank you Jamie!! xx
Sofia
This green house is amazing, I am in love! This is very inspiring!!
Samantha
Thanks Sofia 🙂
Maggie
I just pinned this for my future home…how gorgeous!! By far the most character-filled greenhouse I’ve ever seen 🙂 Great job – thank you for the inspiration!
Samantha
Thanks so much Maggie! Glad this inspired you 🙂
Barbara
Absolutely love your greenhouse!!!
Samantha
Thank you Barbara!!
Michelle
SO BEAUTIFUL!!!
I just found a bunch of old window frames for free and will be building my dream greenhouse too! happy gardening 💛
Samantha
Love that Michelle! The perfect way to reuse them 🙂
Stacy
Love this! I’ve got 12 large windows I’m saving for a greenhouse and this would be perfect! Do you have any ventilation in this?
Samantha
Amazing! Actually, I’m using the ‘space’ between each board etc as ventilation. I also installed two of the back smaller white windows on a hinge so that they can be propped open! Man, it gets hot in there quick!! Hope this helps!! 🙂
Cindy
Sam, your greenhouse is amazing!
You and Brandon remind me so much of my daughter and her partner! I never thought my daughter would take to farm life, but she loves it! I can’t wait to share your website with her.
Looking forward to future posts!
Cindy
Samantha
Aww love that Cindy!! Hope she finds some inspiration over here 🙂
Jill Dangler
We are definitely inspired. Love you little greenhouse. It is about the size we plan to build and love the slant roof.
Could you tell me the front wall and back wall heights?
Samantha
Hey Jill! Thats so exciting! It’s not perfect rounded measurements because we had to kind of work off of our windows.. however the front is approximately 12 feet high and the back is about 10 feet high. I wanted it to be as tall as I could make it haha! Normally the front would be approx 8-10 feet and the back only a small slant. Hope this helps 🙂
Stacey
I love your design!!!
I’ve been dreaming as well for a very long time. It would be great to talk and get your feedback.
Samantha
Hey Stacey! Send me an email anytime I’d be happy to ask any questions! Hope you get yours soon! 🙂
Tina
Hi Samantha,
I’ve aquired some old windows and I want to build this so I can start seedlings for my garden and the community garden near us.
Can you please tell me if you stained or protected the wood you purchased? I read that it’s pressure treated, but I’m wondering if I still have to protect it. I love the color of this wood, so if you can share details of exactly what wood it is, that “wood” be so helpful ☺️
Samantha
Hey Tina! Yes this is pressure treated wood in the ‘Sienna’ stain colour. It comes like that from Home Depot or here in Canada from Home Hardware! This is the best wood when making outdoor structures! Worth the extra bit of money for sure! Best of luck in building your own 🙂
Christina
So awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Bellamy
So inspiring! What a fantastic job you all did!
Samantha
Thank you!! 🙂
Shirley
What was the final cost, concrete, lumber, windows and etc?
Samantha
Hey Shirley! I actually built a floating floor on deck corner posts, so no poured concrete. All said and done approx $1500 Canadian did the trick!
Lacey Draper
Beautiful greenhouse! Adding one to my property was definitely the best garden decisions I’ve ever made. There’s nothing like walking into a warm greenhouse on a cold winter day. I’ve got a question about your floor, are you concerned about how it will hold up in a wet environment? I assume you’ll be watering frequently and it will get constant drips. Did you treat with a water repelling sealer?
Samantha
Hey Lacey! No, that is one thing I kind of regret is not painting the floor!! Might still do it.. but during the summer its more of a potting shed and then in the spring thats when I’ll be doing a lot of seedlings.. so I’ll try and be careful with the drips until I figure something out!! 🙂
Patti
I live in Canada so have very cold winter. Can you use this in the winter?
Samantha
I’m in Canada too Patti! My plan is to see how it goes… I’m thinking it’ll be warm but not warm enough – so we will see!! Follow along and I’ll report back!! 🙂
Shana
Wow, this absolutely stunning! I stumbled across this on Pinterest and showed it to my husband as we’ve been brainstorming and searching for a bit. We are in love with your creation and he is going to see if he can replicate. Thank you so much for sharing this beauty!
Samantha
That’s amazing! Well if you have any questions along the way please don’t hesitate to shoot me a message! 🙂
Molly
Wow Sam, this is lovely! How on earth did you source so many matching 2nd hand windows?!
Samantha
Thanks Molly!! They are all actually off of our farmhouse 🙂 We redid our windows last winter… so it was the perfect way to reuse them!!
Rolande
Fellow Ontarian here waving at you from Prescott! It looks great! I too have been busy with an 8’x12’ and stopped by looking for inspiration on how to set up the inside. As I already have a garden shed for potting up, mine will be mainly just growing and to soak up sunshine when it’s twenty below. I’ll be aiming for the central path with benches and raised beds either side. I went tor peaked roof because I’d done the lean tos and hoop kinds before. This one is my true dream greenhouse with a victorian flare when I’m done. It’s been slow as I’m doing it myself mostly but the roof will be on by next week and I can finally close it in! You can see progress on my facebook page Chickadee Acres.
Samantha
Wow, sounds like a beauty!! I will for sure check it out 🙂
Michelle
Hi Sam! Beautiful greenhouse. I have been looking for awhile for one that will fit all my needs And look great. Could you tell me the measurements of the windows in the front and back? Thanks bunches!
Samantha
Hey Michelle! Off the top of my head the windows were all almost square – the front ones I believe are 60 so inches long by 45 inches or so wide! The back small white ones are about 30×30″! Hope this helps 🙂
Linda Lavigne
Hi Samantha,
Just wonderful !
I have all my old 9 pane windows from our redo, now we are moving from the Niagara area to Nova Scotia ! I was unsure if I wanted to take the windows with me, but now after seeing your great greenhouse I will be figuring out how to pack them to take them with me. Thanks for the inspiration
Samantha
That’s amazing!! Safe travels across Canada!!
Jill Cooper
I just love it – it should be in a magazine! And how wonderful that it is next to your raised beds. That would be my dream greenhouse too!
Samantha
Thank you so much Jill!! 🙂
mary beth Whalen
hi, thanks for sharing, beautiful. in the front of the greenhouse, at the roofline, is that sealed or does air escape there? also, do u have any ventilation installed? I was wondering what zone u are In and how hot/cold it is there?
Samantha
Hi Mary Beth! The roofing is just the plastic roofing so not sealed super tight. The greenhouse won’t be heated, just naturally heated! I won’t use it full time in the winter as we are in South Eastern Canada where it does get quite cold!! The ventilation is just the ‘holes’ through the wood and such. Hope this helps 🙂
Shannon
Hi Samantha,
I just love your green house design! I’m looking to build one soon. I was wondering if you have to use some form of heat in the winter months. I live in Tennessee where we have milder winters but it can get really cold here. I’d also love to know what kind of wood and stain did you use ?
Samantha
Hey Shannon! I’m going to wait out this season and see what natural heat comes into the greenhouse – I won’t start any seeds until early early spring. I’ll keep you all posted! Here in Canada we have tough winters.. so well see! The wood is pressure treated lumber that is in the ‘Sienna’ colour!
Vanessa
So dreamy!!!!! What are the measurements of the windows and doors? And how many of each?!?! Such an inspirational greenhouse!!!!!
Frances Black
Hi Samantha, I’m looking at building my own early this spring and yours was the first thing I saw on Pinterest. Loved it! You did a wonderful job! We just got our doors and windows today and was wondering if you sanded the windows before painting them. Got them used so definitely needed some sanding and new paint. And if so, what’s the most efficient way to do it?
Samantha
Thanks so much! So exciting! I did do some touch up paint yes- I would make sure you sand any chipped areas to make sure the new paint adheres properly. You can use hand block sanders or a orbital one! I know painting windows is not fun.. lots of painters tape and a steady hand!!
Carla Larivee
My husband and I are in the panning stages of our greenhouse build but its going to be a similar style. Thank you for the great pictures. This sold me on the roof style… can’t wait to get started
Samantha
So exciting!! Enjoy!!
Kim
So adorable!
Samantha
Thank you Kim!!
Krista
How much approximate did you spend on it ?
Samantha
About $1200!
Kip Stafford
hi Samantha…my name is Kip..just wondering what kind of wood you used on the exterior? I read each comment and couldnt find what you used..love the natural color of the greenhouse..with just the hint of color in the windows..im ready to start my greenhouse, ive been collecting my lumber little by little..so hopefully all goes well and looks as Amazing as yours. Thank you SO MUCH for your INspiraTION..
Samantha
Hi Kip! This is a pressure treated lumber from Home Depot in ‘sienna’ stain colour. You can also purchase this outdoor stain if you want to treat your own lumber!
Gail
Hi Samantha,
How did your greenhouse work over the winter given no insulation? Were you able to grow any veggies to eat over the winter? (e.g. lettuce, spinach, tomatoes etc) Now that spring is pretty much here (even at my lat. 46.31), how are the temperatures overnight in the greenhouse, now that you probably have seeds sprouting?
Samantha
Hi Gail! I use it mostly to winterize anything o may want to dig up or move in the fall for the following spring. Nothing is growing in here over the winter as we didn’t heat it or completely seal it tight! I did have 20 peony roots under soil in pots that survived ☺️
Babs
Beautiful!! Love the clean lines and just imagined myself sitting in it on a slightly wet day (we’re in Wales, it always rains 🤪🙈🙈) listening to the rain pummelling against the windows, super cosy!! ♥️
kip Stafford
Hi Samantha..i just had a question on what is the wood you used on the exterior of your green house.. I am ready to start building mine soon, but have not decided on the wood for the exterior.. Love this and Thank you for your inspiration and videos really help..
Samantha
Hi Kim! This is pressure treated cedar lumber in ‘sienna’ stain!
Marianne
What a fantastic greenhouse ! My question is about the footings. Since you’re in Canada are you not concerned about heaving?
Samantha
The greenhouse is very heavy thanks so all those old heavy windows and framing work. We do have it floating technically on deck blocks but we’ve survived almost a whole year (knock on wood!) without any issues!!
Casey
Hello! this is a beautiful greenhouse. May I ask about the flooring?
Samantha
It’s just a plywood floor! ☺️
Denise Reeser
I just stumbled on your blog from a pin on Pinterest. This greenhouse is so cute!
Samantha
Thank you so much!! ☺️
Sabrina
Hi! It’s a beautiful greenhouse! I just purchased several windows from our local Habitat for Humanity Store and plan to do something very similar. How did you install the windows? Did you just screw them into the 2x4s? And then caulk around them? Any help would be appreciated!
Samantha
Yes!! We actually didn’t do any caulking we just made sure they were a snug fit!
