I am so excited to talk to you today about an easy DIY project that can really change your space, and breathe new life into an old piece of furniture. It does require some time and patience, but with the right tools and the right steps, it really is an easy project! And right in time for the weekend… make sure you plan to hit the Hardware store on your way home! You’re going to want to start now!

The Piece

Okay first things first. Let’s talk about the piece of furniture you want to transform. For me, it was a vintage sideboard & two cane back chairs that caught my eye at my favourite antique barn (you can find my top antiquing tips here!) for the front entrance of my home. Whatever piece you chose, it doesn’t matter if it has a shiny finish, dull, rustic etc – this magical paint will cover it. And if you dont have a piece in mind friend – could be anything like a cabinet, table, end table, dresser etc – just save this email for a rainy day, after you find the garage sale gem 🙂

Prep your Piece!

Before we crack open the paint and get to talking about techniques. We need to prep your piece & gather your tools that are needed. First, remove all hardware off your piece. Take a warm damp cloth with a light soap that wont leave a residue and clean away any dust or dirt. To finish off the prep, I did take a fine grit sanding block and did a quick once over – just to smooth any nicks that may be hard to see to the eye. Then, took the same cloth and did another wipe down to remove the fine dust. Now for your tools – a good mixed media paint brush (I love the line from Home Hardware), a stir stick, plastic gloves, an old sheet or plastic to put down under your piece for any drips & some painters tape! Last but not least – the paint!

Introducing Fusion Mineral Paint

Friend, I have found the paints of all paints. This line is not new by any means, but now that I own a home and need a good paint to refurbish garage sale finds, I fell instantly in love with this brand! This stuff covers it all – and only takes 2 coats to do it (I say 2 because my pieces were so dark – something lighter might only take 1 coat!) and hardly a full container of paint. This paint though isn’t on every corner – you may have to travel to find your supplier. I used ‘Raw Silk’ for my off white, and boy did it every turn out good!

Now time to Paint!

Okay now remember that painters tape? I decided to tape my sideboard so I didnt have to paint the inside of the piece. Totally up to you on your preference. If you have a steady hand – you can forego the tape. But even with my painting background… I like to have it in place just in case 🙂 Now your piece is clean, lightly sanded and taped – its ready for paint! Get going! (This picture is only ONE coat of paint – look how good that coverage is!)

Buhbye to the brown – hello ‘Raw Silk’ white!

Almost at the Finish Line

Now be prepared like I said to do maybe more then one coat if you are covering a dark surface like mine with white. After you are happy with your coverage – leave your piece alone!!!! I cant stress this enough. Do not touch your piece for 24 hours. Let it dry! Even though it says it dries quick, all paint needs to set. And in my experience, if you start staging your piece or moving it around to soon after painting, you will end up scuffing your piece and having to fix it. So be patient, and wait! Now if you are painting a table top or dresser, I would suggest finishing off your piece with a varathane to add a durable and wipeable like finish to your piece. So if you are setting a glass on it for example, it wont scuff or leave a ring. My favourite varathane I have linked here – and you can also get it in a spray can so its super easy.

Enjoy the Transformation!

Now stand back and take a look at your beauty! That wasn’t so hard right? I couldn’t believe how well the paint worked on my side board & chairs. It’s hard to see from the picture, but it had a heavy varathane on it already and it is now completely paint covered & I haven’t had any chipping or wear and tear visible yet! So go have fun staging your new piece, I’d love to hear & see about your project! Tag me @samanthabesely on Instagram!
